Ashtavakra Gita in Hindi

by Ashtavakra

📖 Ashtavakra Gita in Hindi — Hindi Audiobook ke Baare Mein

The Ashtavakra Gita is one of the most direct and uncompromising texts of Indian spiritual philosophy. Also known as the Ashtavakra Samhita, it is a dialogue between the sage Ashtavakra and King Janaka of Mithila on the nature of the Self, freedom and true knowledge. Its authorship and date are uncertain, but it is traditionally attributed to the teaching of Ashtavakra, and it has long been treasured by followers of Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of non-duality.

What the text is about

The text is written in Sanskrit verses and is usually divided into twenty chapters. It opens with Janaka asking three simple but profound questions: how can knowledge be attained, how can detachment arise, and how can liberation be achieved? Ashtavakra's answer is not a long programme of rituals or practices. Instead, he points straight to the truth that, according to this tradition, the seeker already is.

In later chapters Janaka expresses his own wonder and joy as he recognises this truth, and the two voices alternate as the teaching deepens. Unlike many scriptures, the Ashtavakra Gita contains very little story. Almost every verse is a direct statement about consciousness, freedom and peace.

Key teachings of the Ashtavakra Gita

You are the witness. Ashtavakra teaches that the true Self is not the body, not the mind and not the changing world of experiences. It is pure awareness, the silent witness in which all these appear. Suffering, in this view, comes from identifying with what is seen rather than recognising oneself as the seer.

Freedom is a matter of understanding. A theme that runs through the text is that bondage and liberation depend on how one understands oneself. Ashtavakra suggests that a person who knows himself to be free is free, while one who believes himself bound remains bound. Liberation is therefore not something to be gained in the future, but a truth to be recognised now.

Beyond doing and achieving. Because the Self is already complete, the text treats striving, rituals and even meditation, when done with a sense of personal effort, as secondary. This is one reason the Ashtavakra Gita is considered so radical. It speaks to the seeker who is ready to stop searching outside and look within.

Equanimity. The wise person described in the text remains calm amid praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and pain. Such a person lives in the world, may even rule a kingdom like Janaka, yet is not disturbed by it.

Desire and detachment. Ashtavakra repeatedly points out that desire for worldly objects, and even desire for liberation, keeps the mind restless. Peace comes when such cravings fall away naturally through understanding, not through forced suppression.

About Ashtavakra and Janaka

According to tradition, Ashtavakra was born with his body bent in eight places, which gave him his name. The Mahabharata tells the story of how, as a boy, he came to King Janaka's court and defeated a great scholar in debate. Janaka himself is honoured in Indian tradition as an ideal of a king who lived with complete inner detachment while carrying out his royal duties. Over the centuries, many teachers have spoken about this text, and the Hindi discourses of Osho on the Ashtavakra Gita are especially well known.

Who should listen

This Hindi audiobook is suited to spiritual seekers, students of Vedanta and Indian philosophy, and anyone drawn to meditation and self-inquiry. Because its ideas are subtle, it is often best heard slowly, with time to reflect between sections. Listeners new to Indian philosophy may find it helpful to come back to it more than once.

Why listen in Hindi

The Ashtavakra Gita was meant to be heard and contemplated, much as teachings were passed from teacher to student in the oral tradition. Listening to the Ashtavakra Gita in Hindi brings its Sanskrit concepts closer to everyday understanding while keeping their depth. The Hindi audio version runs about 1 hour 21 minutes, a length that suits quiet, focused listening in one or two sittings.

For those ready to ask the question of who they truly are, the Ashtavakra Gita offers a clear and timeless pointer within.
