📖 Autobiography of a Yogi Hindi Audiobook — Hindi Audiobook ke Baare Mein
Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda is one of the most widely read spiritual books of the twentieth century. First published in 1946, it tells the life story of a young seeker from Bengal who became one of the earliest Indian teachers of yoga to live and teach in the West. For many readers around the world, it was their first introduction to the saints, traditions and inner practices of India. In India the book is also well known through its Hindi edition, Yogi Kathamrit.
What the book is about
Yogananda was born Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur in 1893. The book begins with his childhood in a devout family whose members were disciples of the great Kriya Yoga master Lahiri Mahasaya. From an early age Mukunda longs for direct experience of God, and much of the early part of the book describes his search for a true guru, his attempts to run away to the Himalayas, and his meetings with a remarkable range of holy men and women.
His search ends when he meets Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, who becomes his guru and trains him with both love and strict discipline at his ashram in Serampore and Puri. The book then follows Yogananda's own monastic vows, his founding of a school for boys, and his journey to America in 1920, where he spent most of the rest of his life teaching meditation and founding the Self-Realization Fellowship.
Key themes and teachings
The guru and disciple relationship. The chapters about Sri Yukteswar are among the most loved in the book. Yogananda describes his guru as wise, demanding and deeply caring, and shows how a teacher can patiently correct a student's ego while guiding him towards inner freedom.
Kriya Yoga. Yogananda presents Kriya Yoga as an ancient technique of meditation and breath control, revived in modern times through the line of Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya and Sri Yukteswar. The book explains its place in the tradition and its aim of quickening spiritual growth, while the actual practice is traditionally taught through initiation rather than in print.
Saints of many traditions. The book is famous for its portraits of extraordinary people: the perfume saint, the tiger swami, the levitating saint, the woman yogi Giri Bala who was said to live without eating, and the joyful Anandamayi Ma. Yogananda also writes about meeting Mahatma Gandhi at Wardha, the poet Rabindranath Tagore, the scientist Jagadis Chandra Bose and the Bavarian mystic Therese Neumann.
Science and spirit. Throughout, Yogananda tries to show that spiritual experience and modern science need not be enemies. He often draws comparisons between yogic ideas and discoveries in physics, presenting the universe as an expression of a single divine consciousness.
Unity of religions. Yogananda writes with deep respect for both the Hindu scriptures and the teachings of Jesus, and he repeatedly suggests that the essential message of all true religions is the same search for God within.
Many episodes in the book describe miracles and supernatural events. Yogananda presents them as real experiences in his life and the lives of his teachers. Listeners will approach these stories in their own way, but even those who read the book mainly for its human story often find its sincerity and warmth moving.
Who should listen
This book will appeal to spiritual seekers, people interested in meditation and yoga, and anyone curious about India's saints and spiritual heritage. Young listeners who are searching for meaning, and older listeners who want an inspiring companion for daily reflection, both tend to connect with it. It is also a fascinating piece of history, showing how Indian spiritual ideas travelled to the West in the early twentieth century.
