After Shiva arrives, an unexpected event reveals that he may be the Neelkanth, the long-awaited saviour foretold in Meluhan legend, whose sign is a blue throat. Suddenly the reluctant immigrant is expected to rescue an entire civilisation from its enemies.

Key themes of the novel

Gods as people. Amish's central idea is that the great figures of our tradition may once have been humans who earned their divinity through their deeds. Shiva in this novel is brave, funny, sometimes impulsive and full of doubt. He smokes, dances and questions whether he deserves the faith others place in him.

Good and evil are not simple. The Suryavanshis see the rival Chandravanshis and the mysterious Nagas as their enemies, and at first Shiva accepts that view. As the story develops, he begins to suspect that the line between good and evil is not where everyone assumes it to be. This question drives the entire trilogy.

Rules and fairness. Meluha is orderly and efficient, but its system also contains a harsh practice of declaring certain people vikarma, outcasts blamed for misfortune. Through Sati, Daksha's daughter, who lives under this label, the novel raises questions about rigid social rules and whether they can be unjust.

Love and duty. The romance between Shiva and Sati is one of the warmest parts of the book. Their relationship grows slowly, tested by tradition, honour and Shiva's own sense of responsibility.

Memorable characters. Readers remember Nandi, the loyal Meluhan officer; Veerbhadra, Shiva's closest friend; the stern and principled general Parvateshwar; the brilliant scientist Brahaspati; and the skilled physician Ayurvati. Each adds a different shade to the world Amish builds.
